IRS Extends Tax Filing Deadline: File for Free with IRS Free File

Deadline Remains April 15th for Payments, Extensions Provide Time to File

WASHINGTON - The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) reminds taxpayers that while the tax filing deadline has been extended, the payment deadline remains April 15, 2024. Taxpayers can file for a free extension using IRS Free File.

Filing an extension gives taxpayers extra time to file their return, but it does not extend the deadline to pay any taxes owed. The deadline to pay taxes remains April 15th, regardless of whether an extension is filed.

IRS Free File is a free service that allows individual taxpayers to file their tax returns electronically. It is available to taxpayers of all income levels and provides access to brand-name tax software. Taxpayers can file their extension using Free File on IRS.gov.

To file for an extension, taxpayers should go to IRS.gov and click on the "Free File" link. They will be asked to provide some basic information, including their Social Security number, date of birth, and address. Once they have provided this information, they will be able to choose a tax software provider and begin the filing process.

It is important to note that filing an extension does not give taxpayers more time to pay their taxes. If taxpayers owe taxes, they should make a payment by April 15th to avoid penalties and interest.

The IRS encourages taxpayers to file their taxes electronically, either using Free File or another tax software provider. Electronic filing is the fastest and most accurate way to file a tax return.
